Vacuum Pump FAQs (quick and real)

What size pump do I actually need?

Rule of thumb: small splits are fine on 5–8 CFM. Multi-splits/light-commercial like 8–12 CFM+. Bigger is faster—but big hoses, core removal, and a clean system matter just as much. Check your gear specs and don’t strangle it with skinny lines.

Single-stage or two-stage?

Two-stage hits deeper vacuums quicker and deals with moisture better—great for installs and big services. Single-stage is fine for routine stuff. Pick what fits most of your week.

How often should I change the oil?

When it goes cloudy/milky, after a dirty or wet system, or per the manual. Fresh oil = easier microns and less headache.

Do I really need a micron gauge?

Yep. Put it at the system, not the pump. It’s the only way to know you’ve actually hit target and to run a proper decay test.

Okay for R32/A2L?

Many pumps are, as long as you follow the book: ventilate, no ignition sources, and stick to local rules. Always check the manual for A2L compatibility.

How do I speed up evacuation?

Big ID hoses (3/8" or 1/2"), short runs, pull the cores, isolate sections. Keep the setup tidy and it’ll pull down quicker.
